Jeeps

Jeep owner's tend to be passionate about their vehicles and we're no exception. We currently share our home with a 1999 Wrangler TJ with many modifications and a nearly stock 1969 CJ5. In this section, we will share with you what modifications we have made to the TJ to make it an almost unstoppable off-road vehicle. We will also have some photographs of our adventures into the Southern California deserts and mountains. Many of our jeep trips support our astronomy or photography hobbies.

The jeep on the initial page for this site is a 1994 Wrangler YJ that we used to have. Although the picture looks cool, it also demonstrates a problem with rough terrain - If you can't keep all four wheels on the ground, you won't benefit from four wheel drive. The 1999 Wrangler TJ we now own has been modified with a Rubicon Express Superflex lift and front anti-sway bar quick disconnects. Here's a short MPEG video showing just how flexible this suspension is. Specifications and more data are HERE.

Why do we like these jeeps so much? Because they take us to such interesting places like this tight canyon in the Calico Mountains of Southern CA.

Here are a few pics of the 69 CJ5. This jeep is very capable even though it is almost entirely stock. It is powered by a Dauntless V6 engine, through a stock three speed transmission and T-18 transfer case (with PTO). Tires are 31X10.50 BFG Mud Terrain and spare tire carrier is made by Canyon City here in So. CA and also carries two gas cans (good for the early CJ with 8 gallon gas tank!) Here are a few shots of wild woman Donna in the 94 YJ. This jeep had just a few mods to make it work a little better. It was powered by the stock 4 banger but had a 2" suspension lift and an EZ Locker locking rear differential. This differential stripped out after about 12 months of fairly light duty use and had to be replaced - I can't recommend it, especially if you do any real rock crawling. More data on this jeep is HERE.

Donna get's some air. Without the locker, this jeep would be going backwards on this hill as tires on opposite corners spun in the air.

Even with the locking diff you still want to pick the best line through the rough part. Donna has all four wheels on the ground here - a good line.

And... She easily makes it over the top!

Coming soon: more info on these jeeps, the 99 TJ and the TJ buildup.
